Becoming a Working Student

My name is Helen Judziewicz; I started riding at the age of five and have been addicted ever since. I grew up in Duluth, MN and worked at several dressage barns.  During my time there I was able to gain some basic riding skills as well as some knowledge on barn management. Becoming a working student had been one of my goals since I was in middle school. Furthering my equine education has always been important to me. Being a working student is one of the best ways to grow as an equestrian. It is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to eat, sleep, and breathe horses.
I have been working with KYB since May of 2014. I was fortunate enough to bring my own horse, Haley’s Comet, with me.  I love each and every day I get to spend at the barn. Dressage and working with horses has been my lifelong dream. I would like to share some of the things I have learned since I’ve become a working student, as well as some of the day-by-day rules I live by to try to contribute to KYB as much as possible:

One of the most important things I have learned is that a good horse person needs to pay very close attention to detail. Being able to notice little differences in a horse’s routine can help prevent larger problems from occurring. It is important to be aware and if you see something that is concerning let someone who can help know.
Every day is an opportunity to learn. Keep an open mind; everyone should share his or her ideas and knowledge. Be grateful for the advice and guidance your trainer gives you, they want to help you grow as a horseperson. Lessons are a wonderful thing; make sure you are taking in all of the information that is given to you. If something doesn’t make sense, ask questions.
We work together as a team. Each person has their tasks and if they are all accomplished, the day will be productive. Communication is key, it is important to talk to each other and voice any concerns or information that needs to be known. Everyone should to be aware of what is expected of him or her that day and should help each other throughout the day when they have the chance.

Being a working student is hard work. It is important to be reliable, responsible, and punctual. Having a good attitude and great work ethic is essential in our team environment. We strive to be timely and organized to ensure that everyone’s (people as well as horses) experiences here are safe, educational, and enjoyable. We love what we do!
